02. ABOUT THE ROLE

FAR Labs is building a distributed inference platform designed to serve large language models efficiently across diverse hardware. Serving quality — latency, throughput, memory efficiency, cost, and model quality — sits at the core of the product. We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to design, build, and scale the backend systems powering FAR Labs products and platforms. This is a hands-on engineering role with significant technical ownership. You will work across APIs, distributed services, data systems, authentication, real-time communication, integrations, and production infrastructure. You will collaborate closely with AI, infrastructure, frontend, and product engineers to turn complex technical requirements into reliable production systems. We are looking for someone who goes beyond implementing tickets — someone who understands the broader system, makes thoughtful architectural decisions, identifies technical risks, and takes responsibility for what happens after the code reaches production.

03. WHAT YOU'LL OWN

Backend Architecture & Development

• Design, build, and maintain production backend services primarily using Go, alongside TypeScript/Node.js and Python where appropriate.
• Own backend features from architecture and implementation through testing, deployment, and production support.
• Design systems that remain maintainable, reliable, and scalable as traffic and product complexity grow.
• Make pragmatic architectural decisions and continuously improve existing services.
• Identify technical debt, performance bottlenecks, and reliability risks before they become larger problems.

APIs & Service Communication

• Design and maintain APIs and service interfaces using REST, gRPC, SSE, and WebSockets.
• Build reliable communication between internal services and external-facing products.
• Design APIs with clear contracts, appropriate versioning, error handling, and backwards compatibility.
• Build real-time and streaming functionality where required.
• Integrate backend services with AI/inference systems and other internal platform components.

Data & Storage

• Design and optimize data models using PostgreSQL.
• Work with Redis and Valkey for caching, state management, and high-performance workloads.
• Build integrations with S3-compatible object storage and Cloudflare R2.
• Improve query performance, caching strategies, data consistency, and reliability.
• Make appropriate architectural decisions around persistent and transient data.

Authentication & Security

• Build and maintain secure authentication and authorization flows using Auth0 and JWT.
• Apply secure backend development practices across APIs, services, data access, and integrations.
• Design appropriate access-control mechanisms for internal and external services.
• Consider security as part of system design rather than an afterthought.

Integrations & Product Infrastructure

• Build reliable integrations with external platforms and third-party services.
• Implement and maintain payment functionality using Stripe where relevant.
• Design resilient integration patterns with appropriate retries, idempotency, validation, and failure handling.
• Support backend functionality required by FAR Labs products and developer-facing services.

Performance & Reliability

• Profile and optimize backend services for latency, throughput, resource utilization, and reliability.
• Design services that handle failures gracefully and remain stable under load.
• Implement appropriate caching, concurrency, rate limiting, retries, and timeout strategies.
• Debug complex production issues across application, database, networking, and infrastructure layers.
• Partner with SRE/infrastructure engineers to improve production reliability.

Testing & Delivery

• Build automated tests using Go testing tools, pytest, Supertest, Testcontainers, and other appropriate frameworks.
• Maintain high standards around code quality, testing, reviews, and production readiness.
• Work with GitLab CI/CD to automate testing and delivery.
• Contribute to deployment and release practices that enable fast, reliable engineering.
• Ensure critical backend functionality has meaningful automated test coverage.

Observability & Production Ownership

• Build services with observability in mind, including meaningful logs, metrics, traces, and health checks.
• Work with Prometheus and Grafana as FAR Labs expands its observability stack.
• Monitor production behaviour and use operational data to improve systems.
• Participate in incident investigation and root cause analysis.
• Take ownership of production issues involving the services you build.

Engineering Collaboration

• Work closely with AI/ML, SRE, frontend, product, and other backend engineers.
• Participate in architecture discussions, technical planning, and code reviews.
• Challenge technical decisions constructively and propose better approaches where appropriate.
• Share knowledge and help raise engineering standards across the team.
• Contribute to technical documentation and maintain clear system knowledge.

04. REQUIREMENTS

• 5+ years of professional backend engineering experience building production systems.
• Strong commercial experience with Go.
• Experience with TypeScript/Node.js and/or Python in backend environments.
• Strong understanding of backend architecture, APIs, and distributed systems.
• Hands-on experience designing and building REST and/or gRPC APIs.
• Experience with real-time or streaming communication using technologies such as WebSockets or SSE.
• Strong experience with PostgreSQL, including schema design, indexing, query optimization, and transactions.
• Experience with Redis, Valkey, or similar in-memory data stores.
• Strong understanding of concurrency, networking, caching, asynchronous processing, and service-to-service communication.
• Experience building authentication and authorization systems using JWT, Auth0, or comparable technologies.
• Experience with Docker and AWS-based production environments.
• Experience with automated testing and CI/CD pipelines.
• Strong understanding of production reliability, monitoring, debugging, and performance optimization.
• Ability to make technical decisions independently and explain the reasoning behind them.
• Strong ownership mindset and ability to work effectively in a fast-moving engineering environment.
